Greetings,
So clearly we are out of the habit of taking pictures of our Greenville happenings. This is for mainly two reasons 1. I broke John's camera which is much better than my point and shoot 2. I am extremely unmotivated after the wedding festivities and I guess one more reason 3. I am lazy lately. So without further ado, I will provide a rant of my thoughts.
J and I have been into TV series dramas to fill our evening after work. We have polished off the whole Soprano series, caught up on Weeds (and continue to watch it on Showtime), 6 Feet Under, The Wire (RIP, my fav of all time), Heroes (awaiting the new season), Friday Night Lights (also awaiting the new season...although last season was kind of disappointing)..just to name a few.
Recently J and I started watching Mad Men which is another drama on AMC..and unlikely contender for a new drama. I think they are in their second season or finishing it up right now.
I would recommend it, we just finished the first disc of the 1st season.
It is a drama about Advertising Executives on Madison Ave. in NY starting in 1960. The funniest thing about it so far is the smoking on camera. Of course, this is coming from an era just ending doctor promotion of cigarettes for health benefits.
While I understand this is a drama TV show it doesn't seem to sugar coat "the good ole days". In fact, it is quite depressing to see how women were treated back in the day. Getting married young to someone you may not know that well...but this is better than being doomed as a single gal or worse divorced! Marriages are crumbling, affairs galore, ashamed of mental illness, doing what your husband says (what am I in SC?!...just kidding).
Which got me thinking about my family. My grandma was a city girl; back in the days when Detroit was something exciting and special. While I don't know much about her past, I would dig around as a child in her old clothes. I get this feeling that she would wear glamorous costume jewelry and scarves made out of foxes (whether this is reality or not, I like to think she was super glamorous at least when she was single). Even though her era was back in the 40's/50's, she would never sugar coat the past for me. She loved her family, but as a child she would always joke to me-never get married!! I would always say, oh yeah right grandma-what are you talking about!? Now that I am older I realize that it wasn't that she was against marriage. It was what that generation was locked into when they got married. Her education was done, her family was her job. While this is certainly needed, (and I am certainly not saying being a mom is easy work) she always felt unsatisfied even as an older woman. I realized her way of being bitter about marriage, was more of her way of saying do what you want and be a successful woman. This may include a family, and it may not. Just do whatever makes you happy and fulfilled (man...I miss that woman).
The point of my rant is this: being a woman today is very liberating (while we have a way to go) we have so many more choices. This TV series is one that really has gotten me to think how far we have come, and yet how far we still need to go.
Well, that was my take on the show. You may just enjoy the drama and cool costumes.
